Schumacher Gets up to Speed in Bobsleigh

Friday January 11th, 2002

Schumacher Gets up to Speed in BobsleighFerrari's Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher had his first taste of bobsleigh on Friday after watching his wife and manager try out the run first.

"It was very interesting. At the end it was really quick," the German said after his guest trip in a four-man bob after practice for a World Cup race scheduled for St Moritz this weekend.

Schumacher sat as number two in the bob and was not involved in pushing down the run. His spokeswoman Sabine Kehm said the top speed was clocked at 137 km/h, close to the 141 that professionals average.

"I was really impressed," added the four times World Champion. "It is a very nice sport but very different to Formula One, I really enjoyed it."

Schumacher's wife Corinna and his manager Willi Weber completed a run before the Ferrari driver, making Schumacher only third in his family to try out the sport. His younger brother Ralf, the Williams driver, had a go in 2001. Michael returned to his Swiss home after the run and starts testing for the first time since the end of the 2001 season at the Spanish Valencia circuit on January 19.
