Schumacher's Swiss Home Plans Put on Hold

Tuesday March 19th, 2002

Schumacher's Swiss Home Plans Put on HoldWorld Champion Michael Schumacher's plans to build a new home in Switzerland have been put on hold because of a ruling by local authorities, according to the Swiss ATS news agency.

Schumacher wants to set up a family home on a 17-hectare plot of land in Wolfhalden, a German-speaking area of Switzerland, and move from his current base in French-speaking western Switzerland.

Ferrari driver Schumacher wants to build a hilltop villa with swimming pool, gym and stables close to Lake Constance by 2004, but environmental groups have already opposed the building of the home.

And now the Federal Department for Territorial Development have said that turning the plot of land, which is in an agricultural area, into housing does not fall under land management laws.

Residents of Wolfhalden have said in the past that they expect the decision to be referred to a local referendum and a discussion is already planned to be held on April 15.
