Schumacher Drops Radical New Helmet

Saturday March 30th, 2002

Schumacher Drops Radical New HelmetFerrari star Michael Schumacher decided on Saturday not to continue using a helmet design he tried out at Interlagos during Friday practice for the Brazilian Grand Prix.

The aerodynamically advanced helmet was the first development of a radical new design from manufacturers Schuberth, but Ferrari technical director Ross Brawn revealed it is currently in the development stages.

"It is an experimental helmet that Michael is developing with his helmet suppliers," Brawn revealed during Saturday's first 45-minute practice session. "It provides an aerodynamic advantage with the engine air intake."

Schumacher controversially dumped former helmet suppliers Bell last year to move to German manufacturer Schuberth, and the company has continually worked with the World Champion to develop new designs.
