Former Formula One star Johnny Herbert's dream of racing in this weekend's Indianapolis 500 was dashed by logistical problems on Sunday as he failed to secure a place on the grid.
Unlucky Herbert, who secured a drive with Duesenberg Brothers Racing at the last minute, had hoped to post a qualifying time around the oval track last weekend but ran out of time as he was forced to fly to California to compete in the American Le Mans Series.
In the ALMS race, at Sears Point, Herbert missed out on victory to Dane Jan Magnussen by just four-tenths of a second, but his second place was enough to gain him the championship lead.
He had been aiming to complete the motorsport "Grand Slam" this year by adding America's flagship race to his past Grands Prix and Le Mans victories. He will compete at Le Mans again this year, driving a works Audi.
