Maserati, one of the great names of Formula One's golden age, will return to international racing in 2004 in the FIA GT championship.
The Ferrari-owned Italian sportscar maker said in a statement today that the car will begin an on-track development programme in 2003, while a one-make trophy championship will also be run in Europe limited to Maserati owners and enthusiasts.
Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has ruled out Maserati returning to Formula One, where stablemate Ferrari are now dominant after winning the constructors's title for the last four years in a row.
Argentine Juan Manuel Fangio won two of his five Formula One world titles with Maserati in the 1950s, but the marque withdrew from Grand Prix racing in 1958. Maserati returned briefly to the world touring car championship in the late 1980s.
