Australian GP to Rerun Speed Comparison Test

Monday November 18th, 2002

Australian GP to Rerun Speed Comparison TestThe 2003 Australian Grand Prix will again host a special speed comparison event that will see a Formula One car race one lap against a V8 Supercar and a BMW road car.

The event, which proved to be very popular during the 2001 Grand Prix at the Melbourne circuit, will feature a BMW-powered Williams driven by Spanish tester Marc Gene, a Holden Commodore V8 Supercar driven by Australian legend Larry Perkins, and a BMW 318ti road car, driven by Allan Moffat.

The three drivers were the ones in charge of the 2001 race too. The speed comparison event will take place each day of the 2003 Australian Grand Prix from March 6-9.

"It was absolutely fantastic," Perkins said of the 2001 event. "People have been asking me ever since, 'When is that going to happen again?' I was very happy with the performance of my Holden Commodore and I think I won two of the races last time.

"But what really grabbed the fans was not so much who won but just seeing the comparison of three cars that are so different being driven at the absolute limit."

To level the cars, the Formula One machine will take the start 30 seconds after the V8 Supercar and a whole minute after the BMW road car.
