Wurz Claims Karting Honours over McNish

Monday November 18th, 2002

Wurz Claims Karting Honours over McNish McLaren test driver Alexander Wurz claimed a rare victory after beating Scot Allan McNish at the seventh Kart Champions Trophy in Vienna on Sunday.

Wurz powered his way into the final after outpacing former Formula One stars Rene Arnoux and Marc Surer in the semi-final, despite a first lap crash in which he bruised his fingers and shin.

Austrian Wurz won a dramatic final battling out the podium places with McNish and 17-year-old Scottish talent Ryan Cannon. In the final, McNish took pole and raced off closely pursued by Wurz, but the Austrian pulled off a daring overtaking manoeuvre on the final corner to take the trophy.

"It was a great fight, excellent fun," Wurz said. "Karting is a tough sport, much tougher than F1 racing. But all of us have the same chances to win and in the end it's not always Schumacher who comes first."
