McNish Set for IRL Test

Wednesday October 16th, 2002

McNish Set for IRL Test Scot Allan McNish is set to test a Toyota-powered Indy Racing League car in a bid to secure a race seat in the United States-based series after failing to secure his future in Formula One.

"The offer of a (IRL) test came up so that should happen in the next few weeks," said McNish. "Toyota want to keep my association going and I am certainly confident of still being in the sport next season."

McNish, who has long been contracted to Toyota and moved into Formula One with them this year, lost his drive after last Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix, which he missed due to a heavy accident during qualifying.

It is understood that Toyota are keen to keep him on their books and could back him with the Penske IRL team next year, but a spokesperson for the company could not confirm whether that was the case.
