Australian GP Could be Moved Forward in 2004

Tuesday April 1st, 2003

Australian GP Could be Moved Forward in 2004The season-opening Australian Grand Prix could be moved to February next year to allow China to host its maiden Grand Prix in March, the Melbourne Age newspaper reported today.

The Albert Park event, which has hosted the first Grand Prix of the Formula One season since 1996, could be brought forwards to February 29 next year to allow China to slot in between Australia and Malaysia in the calendar.

"I don't think it would bother us too much because we like to be the first race of the year," a spokesman for the Grand Prix Corporation told the newspaper. "We did hold the race on March 3 once, but usually it's been the second week of March."

The season-opening race has already been subject to debate after Tennis Australia announced they plan to move Melbourne's Australian Open Grand Slam from January to March following player demands.
