Gary Paffett has called on Jordan Grand Prix to orchestrate a shootout between himself and Ralph Firman for the remaining seat in the team.
Paffett's manager, Martin Hines, said his young driver, winner of the German F3 championship, would earn the seat if given the chance against 27-year old Firman, the man believed to be the favourite to land the drive to partner Italian Giancarlo Fisichella next season.
"Gary's chances at the moment are 50-50 but I think the best way to sort this out would be to put them both on the track together. I think that would change things significantly in Gary's favour," Hines said.
"The kid could be the next Nigel Mansell for Britain, just without the moustache. His CV matches anybody's, whether they be Ayrton Senna or Michael Schumacher."
Firman's manager David Kennedy, a close friend of team boss Eddie Jordan, also said that his driver - who has been competing in Formula Nippon in Japan - would relish a showdown against Paffett.
"There'd be no problem at all. Ralph has one of the most formidable CVs of any driver going into a team. He would be the best person for Jordan because of the vast experience he brings," said Kennedy.
Although a Jordan spokesperson said a shootout was "unlikely" and that Jordan would base his decision on "previous form and calibre", they did not rule out such an event taking place.
