Brazilian Emerson Fittipaldi will try to become the first man to win the CART title as a driver and an owner after announcing the formation of his own team on Monday.
The twice former Formula One World Champion, who also won the 1989 CART title with Patrick Racing before retiring in 1996, will run Fittipaldi-Dingman Racing with business partner James Dingman.
Fittipaldi, 56, won the 1972 and 1974 Formula One titles and is the uncle of former CART racer Christian Fittipaldi, who is trying to make his Daytona 500 debut this weekend.
"I am very proud to return to ChampCar racing at a time when the sport is in the midst of its most significant turnaround in history under the leadership of Chris Pook," Fittipaldi told the CART website.
"I have known the Dingmans through James's father, Michael Dingman, for several years and I am confident that this partnership will be successful on and off the track."
Portugal's Tiago Monteiro, who raced in Formula 3000 last season as teammate to France's Sebastien Bourdais, will be the Fittipaldi-Dingman Racing team's driver. Formula 3000 champion Bourdais has also entered CART with champions Newman-Haas.
Fittipaldi's team will start the season, which begins in Florida on February 23 with the inaugural Grand Prix of St Petersburg, with one car but plan to run two in 2004.
