Jacques Villeneuve's manager Craig Pollock looks set to run his own ChampCar team this season after scheduling a news conference with CART president Chris Pook for next week.
A statement issued on Friday invited the media to Villeneuve's Le Newtown restaurant in Montreal on Wednesday to hear about a "major development" for the 2003 CART season.
No further details were given but Britain's Autosport magazine this week reported that former British American Racing (BAR) Formula One boss Pollock had bought the assets of the defunct PacWest CART team.
It said he had also paid for a year's lease of their Indianapolis premises. A parallel news conference was also scheduled for Indianapolis on Wednesday. The magazine said PacWest sources had confirmed the sale, although Pollock declined to comment.
Autosport said Frenchman Patrick Lemarie, a friend of Canada's former CART and Formula One champion Jacques Villeneuve, was favourite for the drive. Villeneuve, currently at BAR, is managed by Pollock.
