Zlobin Involved in Illegal Street Race

Monday January 20th, 2003

Zlobin Involved in Illegal Street RaceMinardi's Russian Formula One test driver Sergei Zlobin has been involved in an illegal race through the streets of Moscow, according to the BBC.

32-year-old Zlobin agreed to race against Russia's top illegal street racers, claiming he was aiming to increase the popularity of motor sport in his country. According to the BBC, the two teams met at Gorky Park before dawn, and raced through the streets of the city to the Kremlin and back.

"It's true I never say no to a challenge but this isn't a race, it's just a high-speed drive through Moscow," Zlobin was quoted as saying by the BBC. "Today is all about making motor sport popular."

Zlobin, who became the first Russian to test a Formula One car when he was given a run-out by Minardi at Ferrari's training facility in Fiorano, had to concede defeat, finishing the race a whole nine minutes behind his rivals.
