Montoya Banned from Driving on French Roads

Wednesday June 25th, 2003

Montoya Banned from Driving on French RoadsWilliams driver Juan Pablo Montoya is banned from driving on French roads for four months, a court in France decreed yesterday.

Montoya was caught speeding in May, while driving at 204 km/h in his BMW on a motorway between Le Muy and Frejus, on the French Riviera. His case was heard in court in Draguignan, in the south of France, yesterday.

Montoya himself was not present for the hearing, however his lawyer offered the court a letter from the Colombian, apologising for the offence.

The court issued a 4-month ban on Montoya, however the ban is effective in France only. Moreover, the ban has no effect on Montoya's motor racing super-license. He was also fined with 1,200 euro ($1,400 USD).

"In future, my behaviour as a private road-user will be exemplary," Montoya promised the judge in a letter read out to the Frejus court.
