Former Minardi driver Alex Yoong is on standby to make his debut in America's CART series for an unnamed team in Monterrey, Mexico, this weekend.
The Malaysian, who was dropped by the back-of-the-grid Minardi team at the end of 2002, has not driven since the season-ending Japanese Grand Prix but is hopeful of being called up to compete at Monterrey.
"There's a better than good chance I'll race in Monterrey this weekend," Yoong said on his official website. "I've got my visa ready and am ready to jump into the next plane out of Kuala Lumpur the moment I get the confirmation.
"My manager Rick Gorne called to ask me to standby late last night. It will be a great challenge as I've not tested a Champ Car (CART) yet and have not been in a real race car since October last year."
Yoong was hopeful of landing a deal for the full season and combining his drive with a test driver role at Minardi but he was unable to secure a seat.
