F1 Drivers Play Tennis for Charity

Thursday May 1st, 2003

F1 Drivers Play Tennis for CharitySeveral Formula One drivers took up an invitation for a charity tennis tournament at the Sanchez-Casal Academy in Barcelona ahead of this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix.

Williams driver Juan Pablo Montoya was the winner of the tournament, although the Colombian got help from former top tennis player Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario who, playing with Montoya, beat Jaguar driver Mark Webber, partnered by Sanchez-Vicario's brother Javier, in the final.

Also playing were Jordan driver Giancarlo Fisichella, Jaguar's Antonio Pizzonia, Williams test driver Marc Gene, and Sauber drivers Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Nick Heidfeld. The drivers were also joined by the current French Open champion Albert Costa.

"It was definitely good fun today," said Heidfeld. "When I was younger I used to play tennis a lot but now I simply don't have much time left for it anymore. I particularly enjoyed the very relaxed atmosphere of this event."

The tournament was in support of an appeal by the Northampton General Hospital Intensive Therapy Unit and it is expected to contribute around $30,000 for the cause.
