Fernando Alonso will fulfill his contract with the Renault Formula One team, the French squad said today in response to rumours that the Spaniard could leave at the end of next year.
"In order to put an end to speculation which appeared in the international press following the US Grand Prix, the Renault F1 Team would like to confirm that Fernando Alonso is under a long-term contract to the team which includes the 2005 season," said the team in a statement.
Spanish newspaper Marca claimed earlier this week that Alonso was set to replace Michael Schumacher at the Ferrari team at the start of the 2005 season. Schumacher, 34, has a contract with the Italian World Champions until the end of 2006.
22-year old Alonso scored his maiden Formula One win this season at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
