BAR-Honda denied today reports in the German press that they have had discussions with former World Champion Mika Hakkinen over a test drive this season and a possible race seat in 2005.
The stories circulating in Germany suggested Hakkinen would "test soon" for the team and claimed that a contract for a 2005 race drive is already on the table waiting for Hakkinen to sign.
But the team, who currently run Briton Jenson Button and Japan's Takuma Sato as their driver line-up, denied there had been discussions with former McLaren driver Hakkinen.
"There has been no discussion or meeting with the team," a spokesman told Atlas F1. "Both Mika and (BAR-Honda team principal) David Richards will be at the Finnish rally and we think that is where the rumours began."
Richards will be attending the Finnish rally, which begins on Friday, as his Prodrive company runs the Subaru World Rally team and BAR said he is likely to meet Hakkinen socially.
The two-time World Champion, now 35, took a sabbatical at the end of his 2001 season with McLaren-Mercedes and decided in mid-2002 that he would retire for good but had recently discussed a comeback with several teams.
