Alesi to Drive Fangio's Mercedes in Bahrain

Monday March 15th, 2004

Alesi to Drive Fangio's Mercedes in Bahrain Former Grand Prix driver Jean Alesi will drive Juan Manuel Fangio's 1955 Mercedes at the formal opening of Bahrain's new Formula One circuit on Wednesday.

Mercedes said the Frenchman would drive the W196 car that took five-times champion Fangio to his second and third titles in 1954 and 1955.

Alesi retired from Formula One in 2001 after driving for the Tyrrell, Ferrari, Benetton, Sauber, Prost and Jordan teams. He now drives for Mercedes in the German DTM touring car championship.

Bahrain will host the first Grand Prix in the Middle East, and third round of the championship, on April 4.
