Two-time Formula One World Champion Mika Hakkinen was back behind the wheel last weekend when he competed with a Mercedes-Benz in the historic Mille Miglia race in Italy.
35-year old Hakkinen, who retired from Formula One at the end of the 2001 season, took part in the race with a Mercedes 300 SL and was delighted with the affection showed by the Italian fans.
"I've never driven for Ferrari, but the affection shown to me throughout the race was the same the Italians show to the Ferrari drivers," Hakkinen told Gazzetta dello Sport. "And this is strange because I beat the Ferraris, many times."
Hakkinen, with wife Erja as co-driver, finished the race in 233rd place after some problems with his car.
"The wind lifted the door of my car, and the gust of wind was so strong that the rear window shattered, making a lot of noise," he explained. "I skidded a bit, nothing else. Just an unforseen event in the race."
The race finished prematurely due to a fatal accident near Florence, in which 77-year old American Harlan Schwartz lost his life driving a 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300.
