Rubens Barrcihello came very close to Panis' record of 1m 18.38s with a 1m 18.9s. His team-mate was much slower but Jan Magnussen was not running short session but completed a Grand Prix distance with a best time of 1m 23.4s. Damon Hill was second fastest with a 1m 20.7s.
Jean Alesi broke the record set by his team-mate by clocking a fastest time of 1m 21.10s. Gerhard Berger drove a 1m 23.39s. He simulated a Grand Prix distance.
Giancarlo Fisichella said after the tests he was very pleased with the new car. The Italian clocked a faster time than Jacques Villeneuve.
Mika Salo completed a long run again without encountering any real problems.
The Ferrari team was the only one testing here today. Michael Schumacher worked on the brakes and set-up and clocked a time of 1m 20.54s. Eddie Irvine clocked a best time of 1m 21.64s. Both drivers used the new 046/2 engine.
Schumacher commented afterwards: "We have found some set-up solutions that have made a definite improvement to the handling of the car and also reduced tyre wear. The work we have done today has reassured me a great deal. I am really satisfied."
