Summary

Mika Hakkinen dominated another qualifying session at Silverstone (England) today. He took control early in the session right after Michael Schumacher took pole.

Jacques Villeneuve earned his best qualifying result of the season with third. David Coulthard was unable to follow the pace of his team-mate and ended fourth.

Notes

• There could be five teams using Mecachrome engines next year. Already signed: Williams, Benetton and BAR. Speculated: Sauber and Arrows.
• Bridgestone uses a new tyre here. The Bridgestone boss has stated that 'they' lost at Magny-Cours because of the tyres. He stated; "It was important to do our best here, because Britain is the home of Bridgestone in Europe, and also of our leading teams. There was also the factor that we had suffered two consecutive defeats. That is why we decided to make this brand new tyre."
• The Williams team have confirmed that they are talking to Alex Zanardi for a 1999 drive.
• R. Schumacher lost his fastest time because he ignored a yellow flag in the morning. He did not loose a place because of this. His car was not set-up according to the regulations during qualifying and he has to start from the back of the grid. This was also the case for Panis.
• Ferrari uses the old rear bodywork.
