Norbert Haug, Sporting Director of Mercedes Benz, admitted today that McLaren Mercedes tried to negotiate with Michael Schumacher before he signed the new 2002 contract with Ferrari. Haug added, "We spoke, but we did not find a way."

Schumacher hinted as much before today's qualifying session when saying, "a lot of people expect that Ferrari offered me the highest money of all. That's not really true. But, they offered me the best prospect for the future."

The news created some speculation with regards to the status of both Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard. Ron Dennis said he would reveal the 1999 drivers for McLaren soon.

McLaren Protest?

Ron Dennis was not happy when news of a McLaren protest against Ferrari for alleged use of a traction control system was leaked to the media.

He claimed to be "bitterly disappointed" since McLaren and Ferrari had a prior agreement to keep such protests internal.

Jean Todt denies all such speculation of any type of agreement.
