Farewell to Hill; Well Done Frentzen
Benson and Hedges Jordan ended the season with a satisfying result, Heinz Harald Frentzen driving superbly once again to finish 4th - and in doing so clinch 3rd place in the Drivers Championship. The German ace was boxed in at the start and dropped from 4th to 6th, but he regained the positions and held off a determined Ralf Schumacher. Damon Hill bowed out of Formula One with a retirement in his final race. The former World Champion was sorry to disappoint his fans and the team in his final race, but an off track excursion was to cause his subsequent decision to retire from the race. He will be sadly missed by the sport, and by the Jordan team for whom he scored a memorable first ever race win in Belgium in 1998. Heinz-Harald Frentzen: "It is great to finish the season as we had wanted to - with a lot of success and by achieving our target of finishing third in the Constructors' championship. It is a great result for the team - they should be complimented as they did a fantastic job. I am also happy today that I am third in the Drivers' championship. I am not disappointed to have missed the podium today as we have had lots of podiums this season, two victories and plenty to be proud of. As regards the World Championship, I think both drivers would have made worthy World Champions after such a strange up and down season. I don't have any favouritism to either - I would just say congratulations to Mika Hakkinen for achieving the World Championship title after a difficult weekend with so much pressure."
