Schumacher Breaks Mugello Lap Record Again

Friday February 18th, 2000

Ferrari continued testing at Mugello today, where Michael Schumacher was able to once again break the track record, this time by almost two seconds.

Testing began at 09:20. Schumacher worked on endurance testing doing long runs of around 15 laps each. He ran an overall 56 laps with a fastest time of 1:24.850 in the F1-2000 - compared with 1:26.506, which he set yesterday, and with 1:26.704, which the German set exactly a year ago.

Schumacher also ran 13 laps in the F399, which was set up for Rubens Barrichello. The Brazilian worked on set-up and tyre testing and ran 47 laps in last year's car, setting a best time of 1:26.517. Schumacher's time in the F399 was 1:27.129 - over half a second slower than his teammate.

Schumacher had a small 'off' durning the day, which he explained by saying, "I braked a bit too hard and went off the track, but the car was running fine. I am very happy, even if I went off in my F1-2000. Anyway, I am very optimistic. Then I continued with the F399 as we were waiting for replacement parts."

The day's work ended at 18:10pm and will resume tomorrow with Barrichello alone driving the F1-2000.
