Schumacher Will Stay in 2001, Says di Montezemolo

Sunday February 20th, 2000

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo said Michael Schumacher would stay with Ferrari even if he did not win the drivers' title this year.

"Yes," Di Montezemolo told German newspaper Welt am Sonntag when asked whether the double world champion would drive for Ferrari in 2001 if he did not win the Formula One world championship this year.

"We have lost the title in the last race of the season the last three years," the Ferrari boss said. "Our goal has to be to win the drivers' title in 2000."

Di Montezemolo said he had grown tired of the constant pressure weighing on his team in motor racing-mad Italy.

"I don't have that much fun (in Formula One) anymore," he said. "People tend to think that when we win, it's normal. But when we lose, we're idiots. Sometimes I'm a bit tired of that sort of reaction."

Ferrari last won the drivers title in 1979.
