World champion Mika Hakkinen outpaced Michael Schumacher in the final minutes of Thursday's free practice for Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix.
The McLaren driver headed the times with a lap of 1:21.387 set in ideal conditions.
Four times winner Schumacher was less than one tenth of a second behind in his Ferrari.
The Finn judged his final run to perfection, leaving world championship leader Schumacher no time to respond.
Hakkinen's team mate David Coulthard was third quickest, followed by fellow Briton Eddie Irvine in a Jaguar.
Heinz-Harald Frentzen of Germany was fifth best in a Jordan and compatriot Ralf Schumacher sixth in a Williams.
Briton Jenson Button, driving the second Williams, was 13th on his Monaco debut.
