Ferrari's Michael Schumacher grabbed pole position for the Monaco Grand Prix with a blistering display in the qualifying session on Saturday.
The 31-year-old championship leader, clocked a best time of 1:19.475 seconds around the twisting street circuit.
That left him two-tenths of a second clear of his nearest rival, Italian Jarno Trulli in a Jordan, with Briton David Coulthard third in the leading McLaren.
Italy's Giancarlo Fisichella in a Benetton was fourth fastest ahead of defending world champion Finn Mika Hakkinen in the second McLaren and Brazilian Rubens Barrichello in the second Ferrari.
