Head Furious with Verstappen for Lost Victory

Sunday April 1st, 2001

Juan Pablo Montoya, todayBMW-Williams technical director Patrick Head said that Jos Verstappen should accept sole blame for the collision that cost Juan Pablo Montoya his first win in Formula One.

Colombian Montoya produced a scintillating display of driving and led the Brazilian Grand Prix before Arrows' Verstappen ran into the back of him and Head was furious with the Dutchman's part in the incident.

"These guys should hold there hands up but they don't seem to do that these days," Head said. "I thought that Juan Pablo was well in control of the race but unfortunately he got hit from behind as did Ralf much earlier in the race.

"I think it's well known in any situation on the road that the responsibility is with the driver behind. If he runs into the car in front he pays for the damage to both cars.

"It is a well-known situation and I don't think there's anything to discuss about it. We know we've just got to get out and do a good job at Imola."

Montoya was more diplomatic about the situation but still blamed Verstappen for the collision. He said: "I am disappointed. It was going to be one of the best days of my life and it turned into a bad one. I don't know what happened.

"I think (Jos) Verstappen hit me because he braked too late, just a few metres later than me, so we touched. I went for the inside and braked in the same place as always on that corner. Better things will come."

Ralf Schumacher was upset at the collision which cost him the chance of a potential win when he claimed Rubens Barrichello shunted him from behind and he called for the FIA to clarify rules over drivers changing line at the start of a race.

"At the start the engine revs fell and I don't know why," Schumacher said. "Then my car was hit from behind by (Rubens) Barrichello. Obviously this has to be sorted out by the stewards and I hope they will take action as this has to stop in my opinion.

"Today we proved that we have a really good car and we are going to be able to win a race. Unfortunately it didn't happen but I am sure it will happen in the near future."
