Brawn Explains Strategy Choice

Sunday July 15th, 2001

Ferrari's Technical Director Ross Brawn said he was reasonably happy with the outcome of the British Grand Prix, saying their strategy was based on security rather than performance.

"Michael had a high fuel load at the start of the race and once we saw Coulthard was out, there was no point in him fighting Mika - the last thing we needed him to do was go off," Brawn explained.

"We had a fairly conservative strategy today, which was what we needed. Two stops would have been a faster strategy, but we were in a defensive position, not an attacking position. On balance, we wanted to stay with one stop.

"Obviously if we had been on two stops and got blocked at the start that would have been very difficult for us. Our strategy gave us less possibility to attack, but we did not feel that here at Silverstone we could afford to take more risks."

Brawn also admitted that the car was not behaving as they had expected or would have liked, but said it all came through for them in the end.

"The car suffered in the middle of the race more than we expected and then came good again at the end, but we probably were not quite good enough today. But, all things considered, second and third is still a good result."
