Michael Schumacher took to the track today, after his medical examination in Paris yesterday. The German driver got down to work at 10 o'clock this morning, working at first on the set up of his car. Then, Schumacher carried out a few checks and shakedowns on some new mechanical components. He completed a total of 68 laps with a best time of 1:27.287. At the end of the session, Schumacher spoke briefly about his physical condition. "It's true the doctors have said I am ready to resume normal activities, but I am not yet capable of tackling a grand prix," he explained. "I have a problem with one of my knees which prevents me from training in the way I would like. Today, I can do a series of runs of several laps, but I could not drive a grand prix at my usual pace." The German driver said he was confident as regards the end of the season for Ferrari. "I have discovered an F399 in fine form, improved since the last time I drove at Mugello. The development has moved forward in the right direction, both on the aerodynamic and engine side. I am sure it will be competitive in the final two races." Schumacher also denied there had been any misunderstanding between himself and the team. "All these rumours have absolutely no foundation. I have not abandoned the team. I have always maintained contact with Jean Todt and with my engineers and I would say that my relationship with Ferrari is actually stronger than before." The double world champion will not go to Malaysia or Japan for the decisive rounds of the World Championship. "I am sorry that I will be not be going with the team, but I am a racing driver and to go to a circuit without competing would hurt even more." Scuderia Ferrari-Marlboro continues working towards the Malaysian Grand Prix, with Eddie Irvine driving at Fiorano tomorrow.
